Our Humble Beginning
Winter is a time for reflection, the cold and wet weather forces us to slow down and spend time inside in front of the fire and plan for the coming craziness of Spring and Summer. This week we have been dwelling on just how far we come as a family business over the last 7 years.
The first photo above was the backyard of our first family home in Rainbow taken in November 2019 when we purchased the property. A lot of people say they have “nothing” growing in their backyard but what they really mean is they have a healthy lawn with good soil underneath just waiting to be converted into something more productive. This yard literally had nothing growing on the ground at all as it has been “managed” with herbicide for a very long time leaving only the large trees surviving. Our first task in this yard was to spend more than a week on our hands and knees picking up all the broken glass and rusty nails that were present from the back door to the back fence so our son could play outside without hurting himself. From there we designed the mainframe layout of the block and spent the next 4 years transforming a biologically dead, zero topsoil site into a productive oasis from the aridity that surrounded us.
The second photo was taken when we began moving to Nelson in September 2023. By this time, all with sweat equity and virtually no budget, we had landscaped the entire yard and renovated a lot of the house. Now the site has 7 raised beds, a 15 m long polytunnel, 10 m long shadehouse, 15 fruit trees, chicken run, a large slide and swing set, compost and scrap yard, sandpit, a very large lawn for kids to play on, large raspberry patch, roughly 100 fire resistant trees planted as a hedge around the entire boundary as well as flowers and medicinal herbs planted anywhere they would fit.
This was all mostly implemented during and after the Covid lock down periods and we were also developing our urban farm block across the street at the same time. It was an enormous amount of dedicated effort and we hope the new owners will enjoy what we created for them for many years to come.
The new site in Nelson is much more forgiving but we wouldn’t have made it here without first going through the journey of our time in Rainbow. The climate in Nelson is very different to Rainbow, one obvious difference being a lot more direct sunshine in Winter in Rainbow and a lot more water and moderate weather in Nelson.
We have assessed the garden and decided to not hold a Pop Up Market this weekend as we will have a lot more to offer if we wait another week.
Our Pop Up Market will return o the Limestone Coast Pantry Sunday 20th July 10:00 am – 1:00 pm. Come on down for a nice hot coffee, delicious meals, great conversations and Locally Grown Vegetables, Herbal Supplements, Honey and Colloidal Silver Products.
As always you can support our family and business by purchasing our supplements which are available 24/7 from our website and can be posted anywhere in the world.
Our produce is featured on the menu at the Nelson Hotel and customers are welcome to come and visit the farm to take a look and purchase vegetables and supplements Monday to Saturday between 11:00 am and 6:00 pm.

Notes From The Garden
At Rainbow OMG we recognise the centuries long tradition of Moon Planting. In short the different phases of the Moon correspond to growth in in different parts of plants with about 7 days for each phase. The order is Leaf, Fruit/Flower, Root and Stop. We find this cycle an excellent tool for planning and scheduling of all the regular tasks needed for a functional farm.
We are currently in a Fruit and Flower Week which means we have direct seeded Sugar Snap Peas, transplanted Broccoli, pruned our Mulberry Tree and started our first successions of Tomatoes and Capsicums for next Summer in the Nursery Greenhouse.

Product Focus – Reishi Mushroom Caps
The Reishi Mushroom is and edible mushroom originating from Asia. Whilst it is perfectly fine and safe to eat, Reishi Mushroom’s have quite a bitter taste which can be a turn off for people from western cultures. Much like Beef Liver, we recommend consuming them in capsule form to enjoy the health benefits in a convenient and tasteless form.
Reishi’s have a very long history of use by Traditional Chinese Medicine practioners and are an Adaptogen meaning they help to bring balance to various systems within the body. They are also a Prebiotic, which means they contain compounds that feed Probiotic Bacteria within our body i.e. taking Reishi Mushrooms can increase the effectiveness of Gardenkraut by feeding the probiotic bacteria in your system after you consume them.
While they may not contain a huge list of vitamins and minerals, Reishi Mushrooms shine in their overall health benefits and can assist in treating:
- Inflammation
- Fatigue (including chronic fatigue syndrome)
- Frequent infections (urinary tract, bronchitis, respiratory infections, etc.)
- Liver Disease
- Food allergies and Asthma
- Digestive Problems, Stomach Ulcers and Leaky Gut Syndrome
- Tumour Growth and Cancer
- Skin Disorders
- Autoimmune Disorders
- Diabetes
- Viruses, including the Flu, HIV/AIDS or Hepatitis
- Heart Disease, Hypertension, High Blood Pressure and High Cholesterol
- Sleep Disorders and Insomnia
- Depression and Anxiety
We suggest taking 1 capsule every night 20 minutes before bed for a deeper, more rejuvenating sleep.
