Incremental Progress
In Australia July marks the beginning of the new financial year and as such we have just completed our first full year farming in Nelson. While our sales this year were not enormous they were certainly more than satisfactory for the initial year in a new location. We started with an abandoned goat paddock full of waist high weeds, tree stumps, rabbits and kangaroos and zero contacts or market streams to sell into.
By diligently working on the farm in some capacity every day, in and around parenting and home schooling our two children, we now have 49 market beds approximating 320 m² of growing space, landscaped and mulched paths and a ring of flowers and medicinal herbs surrounding the entire block. Our Nursery Polytunnel will soon be complete once our end walls arrive and are installed and we will continue to improve our Wash and Pack areas for efficiency and quality.
This financial year we hope to establish at least two more commercial customers, continue to improve and expand our range of both vegetables and supplements, attend as many markets as we are able and continue to work with retail outlets in Mount Gambier to reach more customers.
Thank you to everyone who has supported us so far, especially the Nelson Hotel, Limestone Coast Pantry, Food For Thought and the Mount Gambier Farmers Market. We look forward to moving onwards and upwards this financial year serving our local region in the best way we can.

Notes From The Garden
At Rainbow OMG we recognise the centuries long tradition of Moon Planting. In short the different phases of the Moon correspond to growth in in different parts of plants with about 7 days for each phase. The order is Leaf, Fruit/Flower, Root and Stop. We find this cycle an excellent tool for planning and scheduling of all the regular tasks needed for a functional farm.
We are currently in a Leaf Week which is our busiest week of each month. We have transplated more than 500 seedlings, direct seeded Rocket and Loose Leaf Lettuce and seeded more succession in the Nursery.
Product Focus – Reishi Mushroom Caps
The Reishi Mushroom is and edible mushroom originating from Asia.
