Rainbow OMG Weekly Post 10/08/22

Winter Abundance & Hints of Warmer Weather

As you can see in the above photo we are producing a broad range of high quality vegetables even in the dead of Winter. This is a great climate for vegetable production as long as we have access to irrigation water of some kind in Summer. In Winter we barely irrigate anything other the Greenhouse which obviously receives no rainfall and also houses our Nursery at this time of year.

After a great birthday week and celebration around a fire circle on Saturday it is time to get back to work and prepare for Spring. We are feeling increasing warmth in the sunshine and our vegetables are all growing just that little bit faster with the slightly warmer weather and longer daylight hours.

For all of you home growers, now is the time to start all of your warm season crops like tomatoes in pots. Spring rolls around quickly here and rapidly makes way for our extended Summer.

Notes from the Garden

This week is a Flower and Fruit week in the Lunar Calendar. We don’t have a huge amount of crops in this category in Winter only our Capsicums which haven’t stopped producing all Winter, Broccoli and Sugar Snap Peas so we have transplanted more broccoli seedlings as well as direct seeding more Sugar Snap Peas. We will also be transplanting the first Zucchini and Cucumber beds of the warm season and have can easily provide frost protection, if needed, for these young plants.

All of our first round of warm season crops have germinated in the Nursery and we will again be sowing trays of Tomatoes, Capsicums, Cucumbers, Zucchinis, Sunflowers and some Jalepenos this week. We are aiming to produce A LOT more tomatoes this season and have strategies set up to make this happen. We want to make a lot of Passata this year!

Our latest batch of Gardenkraut is still available and featured below.

The latest Sunshine Salve is ready! Our new jars are 2.5 x the size of our previous jars so we have raised the price but increased the value for money. There are less than 20 available this time around as we are reserving quite a bit for our growing family. The larger jars will last a very long time, likely more than a year for most people.

We have new packaging for our Herbal Supplements. Our new jars contain a 3 month supply of 100 capsules compared to 50 and offer better value for money.

We have changed over from Beef Liver Capsules to Beef Organ Capsules. These contain Beef Liver, Heart and Kidneys blended together and provide an even more beneficial nutritional profile than just Liver alone.

A reminder that some of our range is limited so please get your orders in quickly to secure your desired organic vegetables.

This week the Garden is providing Spinach, Celery (Limited) Red Russian Kale, Sugar Snap Peas(Limited), Capsicums Limited, Lettuce,  Carrots, Blemmy Beetroots and Parsley.

Crops currently growing but not ready this week are Bok Choi, Broccoli, Coriander and Red Cabbage.

Some of our products may be a little different to what customers are used to so we will be providing Product Profiles in our Weekly Post and in a dedicated page on our website. This will provide recipe ideas and nutritional information for all of the vegetables and products we offer.

Product Focus: Gardenkraut

Most people are familiar with Sauerkraut which is a traditional side dish made of fermented cabbage. However did you know that almost any vegetable can be fermented?

Gardenkraut is our own take on the traditional recipe and is mostly made with Bok Choi rather than Cabbage and also contains Beetroots, Carrots, Ginger, Turmeric, Garlic and Himalayan Salt. All ingredients other than the salt are grown in our gardens.

Fermented Vegetables should be considered a superfood. The lacto-fermentation process transforms vegetables into a very potent Probiotic, providing the following health benefits:

  • Reduced overall inflammation
  • Improvement of digestive disorders like leaky gut syndrome, ulcerative colitis, IBS and pouchitis
  • Improved immunity
  • Better nutrient absorption
  • Prevention and treatment of diarrhea
  • Prevention and symptom reduction of food allergies, including lactose intolerance, milk protein allergy and others
  • Improvement of high blood pressure
  • Reduced risk of cancer
  • Alleviation of arthritis inflammation
  • Reduction of eczema symptoms
  • Lowered cholesterol
  • Protection against H. pylori infection
  • Better immune response in HIV/AIDS patients
  • Improved vaginal health and prevention of bacterial infections like UTIs and bacterial vaginosis
  • Natural remedy for the liver/brain disease hepatic encephalopathy

Fermented vegetables should be kept refrigerated.

Ingredients: Bok Choi, Beetroots, Carrots, Celery, Ginger, Turmeric, Garlic and Himalayan Salt.
