Regenerating Our Soils
“Despite all our accomplishments, we owe our existence to a six-inch layer of topsoil and the fact it rains.” – Unknown
Yesterday I had the pleasure of preparing one of our oldest garden beds to be seeded with carrots. This bed – pictured above – has grown at least 7 consecutive vegetable crops in rotation and recently received a heavy topdressing of our compost. The soil in this bed, which required initial sifting for broken glass, nails and garbage, is now a dark chocolate brown and has a fine tilth to a depth of 30 cm. In other words our soils are rapidly improving despite being in continuous production. The proof is in the pudding-like soil you can see above 🙂
Notes from the Garden
This week is a Root week in the Lunar Calendar. We plant Carrots and Beetroots every month of the year and Direct Seeded both this month. Our Onions have picked up growth and our Garlic has looked great from the day they broke through the soil. We also did an enormous amount of weeding this week in both market beds and the walk ways, all of this material will form the core of our next and largest ever compost pile.
As we have a huge amount of very high quality Butterhead Lettuce in our Greenhouse we are temporarily dropping the price to $5 per head rather than $7.50. Our Butterhead Lettuce should last at least 2 weeks in the fridge so take advantage of this temporary abundance. More on Lettuce below.
We have 2 remaining jars of Gardenkraut available.
The latest Sunshine Salve is ready! Our new jars are 2.5 x the size of our previous jars so we have raised the price but increased the value for money. There are less than 20 available this time around as we are reserving quite a bit for our growing family. The larger jars will last a very long time, likely more than a year for most people.
We have new packaging for our Herbal Supplements. Our new jars contain a 3 month supply of 100 capsules compared to 50 and offer better value for money.
We have changed over from Beef Liver Capsules to Beef Organ Capsules. These contain Beef Liver, Heart and Kidneys blended together and provide an even more beneficial nutritional profile than just Liver alone.
A reminder that some of our range is limited so please get your orders in quickly to secure your desired organic vegetables.
This week the Garden is providing Butterhead Lettuce, Spinach, Celery (Limited) Red Russian Kale, Broccoli, Sugar Snap Peas, Capsicums (Limited), Carrots, Blemmy Beetroots, Coriander and Parsley.
Crops currently growing but not ready this week are Bok Choi, and Red Cabbage.
