Rainbow OMG Weekly Post 29/06/22

Hello Rainbow OMGers,

We have experienced our first general, light frost across the entire farm. As stated last week, we have only just entered the beginning of Winter so a frost is to be expected and celebrated. We celebrate frost as it imparts extra sweetness into all vegetables that is doesn’t kill. We find the sweet flavour really shines through in our Sugar Snap Peas, Bok Choi and Kale, more on Kale below.

We embrace the natural rhythms and cycles of weather and climate for their unique effects on our garden and produce. We never curse the weather, we understand that our role is to work with what is freely provided to us and follow the lead that nature provides.

Notes from the Garden

Last week was an extended “stop” week in the Lunar Calendar. In fact we are still in this cycle until tomorrow when we re-enter the Leaf cycle. Stop weeks allow us to step back from the production beds and focus on overall property maintenance. This month required a lot of weeding so we have been assembling a new compost pile as seen in the photo above.

This compost pile started with a truckload of local horse manure, we then make a crater in the pile and throw in all the weeds we have pulled from paths, beds and areas we have not yet occupied. The main weeds on our block are Stinging Nettle, Oxalis, Barley Grass and a few others. Stinging Nettle in particular is an excellent compost ingredient and can also be used to make a stand alone liquid fertliser. We also sift the ashes from our wood stove and outdoor fire to add valuable minerals to the compost pile. Minerals that have been digested in a compost pile are far more bio-available for plants and the soil food web than if they are just added to the soil surface.

Our goal is to never need to turn our compost piles. We make and need far too much to do this by hand so we make static piles and let them sit for months to finish the transition from raw materials to nutritious compost. The only maintenance on the piles is to water them enough to keep them active, compost needs to be moist but not wet and certainly not dry.

In other great news we will be making the latest batch of Gardenkraut today, which should be ready for sale in 2-3 weeks.

The latest Sunshine Salve is ready! Our new jars are 2.5 x the size of our previous jars so we have raised the price but increased the value for money. There are less than 20 available this time around as we are reserving quite a bit for our growing family. The larger jars will last a very long time, likely more than a year for most people.

A reminder that some of our range is limited so please get your orders in quickly to secure your desired organic vegetables.

This week the Garden is providing Red Russian Kale (limited) Sugar Snap Peas(Limited), Capsicums, Lettuce, Bok Choi, Blemmy Carrots, Beetroots, Parsley and Coriander.

Crops currently growing but not ready this week are Celery, Broccoli, Cauliflower, Red Cabbage and Spinach

Product Focus: Kale

Most people are at least familiar with Kale these days, it comes in many varieties and we have chosen to grow Red Russian Kale due to its superior flavour and visual appeal. Kale is leafy-green vegetable from the Brassica family which also includes, Bok Choi, Broccoli, Cauliflower and Cabbage amongst many others.

We can sound like a broken record but Kale is yet another nutritional superstar containing the following nutritional and health benefits:

  • Vitamin’s A, K, C and B6
  • Manganese, Copper, Calcium, Potassium, Iron, Magnesium and Phosphorous
  • Thiamine, Riboflavin and Folate
  • Smaller amounts of Niacin, Zinc, Pantothenic Acid and Selenium
  • Fights Inflammation
  • Rich in Antioxidants
  • Aids in Detoxification
  • Supports Heart Health
  • Promotes Healthy Fetal Development

While not commonly available in all Supermarkets, this mildly bitter vegetable can be used in many different dishes including:

  • Combine with Bok Choi to bulk out the greens in your Stir Fry or Curry
  • Add to your favourite Soup, Stew or Pasta Sauce
  • Make Kale Chips. Cut Kale into small slices, drizzle on some olive oil, lemon juice, salt and pepper and massage into leaves. Spread out on a baking tray and bake at 180 degrees for 10 minutes until crisp but not burnt
  • Thinly shred into a salad
