Hello Rainbow OMGers,
Happy Winter Solstice! We have just experienced the shortest day of the year which means Winter is here. Winter begins after the Solstice, not the beginning of June which is an arbitrary date, selected by bureaucrats with no knowledge of the Seasons and their interactions with plants, animals and the soil.
In Biodynamics, Winter is understood to be the time to encourage the creation of soil life and fertility. As growth slows down above the ground energy retreats back into the soil, regenerating fertility for the coming Spring flush of growth. We do our part to work with these forces by applying what is known as Preparation 500.
Preparation 500 is prepared by filling cows horns with manure from lactating cows and burying them for months in the ground. The manure turns into an energetically infused compost as the horns are actually antennae for the creative forces of the universe. We then add small amounts of this compost to a barrel of water and stir it back and forth in vortex patterns to infuse the energetic pattern of the 500 into the water. This mixture is then lightly spread across the whole of the land that we manage. This is not a fertiliser, 500 is better understood as Homeopathy for the land and soil. We will be stirring and applying 500 this afternoon.
Notes from the Garden
Last week was a root week in the Lunar Calendar so we planted late Onions, Carrots and Beetroots. In order to make room for one of the Onion beds we needed to harvest an entire bed of Carrots, so we have a total of 20 kg of Carrots for sale more on this below.
We are still waiting to package the latest Sunshine Salve and we will have new, larger jars available asap. Look forward to these being available next week.
A reminder that some of our range is limited so please get your orders in quickly to secure your desired organic vegetables.

Are you interested in our delicious vegetables but live just that little bit too far away to be worth the drive to Rainbow just to pick up one order?
We are looking for Rainbow OMG supporters from other towns in the region who are interested in working with us to increase the distribution of our organic vegetables and healthy lifestyle products. Buyers Hub organisers will be rewarded for their efforts.
If you would like a Rainbow OMG Buyers Hub in your town, please email “evan@rainbowomg.com” with your name and town and we will be in contact ASAP to kick start the process.
Some of our products may be a little different to what customers are used to so we will be providing Product Profiles in our Weekly Post and in a dedicated page on our website. This will provide recipe ideas and nutritional information for all of the vegetables and products we offer.
Product Focus: Introducing “Blemmy’s”

Here at Rainbow OMG we believe our produce should look beautiful, taste amazing and keep for weeks once taken home. If one these criteria are not met, we have thus far been feeding blemished (Blemmy’s) produce to our chickens, which in turn becomes compost and returns to our garden beds.
We are however a beginning farm, working with garden beds that we have just opened up from extremely compacted, lifeless dirt. Our Broadfork is our most valuable tool as it allows us to deeply aerate our soil without inverting the soil profile but there is only so much a Broadfork can do in one session. Many of our beds are still very compacted and will produce less than ideal crops for a few years to come.
Rather than waste the Carrots that are a little small, or have a few nibbles in them we have decided to start offering these very tasty but visually less than ideal vegetables at a 33% discount on retail to those interested. We have 1 kg bags of washed, delicious “Blemmy” Carrots available in our webstore while stocks last.
Currently our only Blemmy’s are Carrots, but you will likely see Blemmy Beetroots, Cucumber, Zucchini and even Broccoli in the future as well as others. “Blemmy’s” will have their own listing in the webstore to avoid confusion when ordering.
