Hello Rainbow OMGers,
Another week of fun in the sun (and rain). This week we started applying compost to some of our market beds as we turn them over from one crop to another. Our initial application rate is very heavy being 400 Litres of Compost per 10 metre bed. This provides a very thick, weed suppressing mulch layer as well as natures best fertiliser.
This compost was made from local horse manure and a 6 x 4 cage trailer full of weeds we pulled from an overgrown garden in Rainbow. In other words there was a huge amount of seeds in the initial pile. A well constructed compost pile will get up to 65 C in the centre which is hot enough to destroy most seeds while not getting so hot as to damage the beneficial soil organisms breeding inside. This compost was finished and ready to go so we will see some very happy plants in the near future.
This week the garden is providing Capsicums, Cherry Tomatoes, Lettuce, Green Beans, Bok Choi, Carrots, Beetroots, Zucchinis, Rainbow Chard, Cucumber, Basil, Coriander and Parsley. We also have a few jars of Gardenkraut remaining before we make our next batch.
Crops currently growing but not ready this week are Spinach, Red Russian Kale, Broccoli, Cauliflower, Sugar Snap Peas, Onions and Garlic
