Rainbow OMG Weekly Post 27/04/22

Hello Rainbow OMGers,

This morning we were happy to wake up to 1.5 mm of rain in our gauge. This is great news, we always welcome the rain in the desert.

We had a lovely ANZAC Day weekend, enjoying some home made, organic, sourdough pizza’s topped with our beautiful veggies including, cherry tomatoes, green capsicums, lots of basil and more. Even pizza bases purchased from a supermarket taste great topped with our fresh vegetables and herbs.

As the seasons have changed we have begun weeding the cold weather plants that germinate this time of year. We utilise a few different strategies for weeding, depending on the plant. Some plants are pulled by hand, others are scraped off at the surface with a hoe or wire weeder and we also have a Flame Weeder which is used to singe plants and burst the cells. It is very effective in controlling Oxalis and is a great, Carcinogen free alternative to Herbicides. We strongly believe anything with POISON on the label has no business in a food garden.

In other great news the Garlic we planted last week has already started to shoot above ground level. We have spent the last few years increasing our locally adapted supply of Garlic and hopefully we can grow enough this year to sell some.

We have also sold out of Sunshine Salve and it will be available again when we can find time to make it. It is best to secure your Sunshine Salve while it is available as it is a very long process to make that requires planning, time, energy and intention.

This week the garden is providing Capsicums, Cherry Tomatoes, Lettuce, Green Beans, Bok Choi, Carrots, Beetroots, Zucchinis, Rainbow Chard, Cucumber, Basil, Coriander and Parsley. We also have a few jars of Gardenkraut remaining before we make our next batch.

Crops currently growing but not ready this week are Spinach, Red Russian Kale, Broccoli, Cauliflower, Sugar Snap Peas, Onions and Garlic
