Hello Rainbow OMGers,
Autumn is here! The nights are cool, the days are beautiful and the ground is soaked from 27 mm of rain in 2 days, we love Autumn as it has the perfect weather to work outside in.
As you can see in the photo above this week we broke ground in 4 new 10 metre garden beds. After spending a full year under 10 cm of woodchip mulch the soil in these beds is moist, dark, and full of earthworms. With the recent rain it was relatively easy to broadfork the compacted soil and these beds will be planted with 5 rows of garlic each.
There is a pervasive myth in gardening that woodchips from Eucalyptus trees contain high levels of tannins that impede the growth of other plants. I can, without any hesitation, state that this is completely false and the opposite is true. I encourage all gardeners to use as mulch woodchip mulch as you can get your hands on, it is far superior to hay or straw in almost all aspects.
This week is a root crop week in the Lunar Calendar so we have been seeding and transplanting carrots, beetroots, garlic and onions.
This week the garden is providing Capsicums, Cherry Tomatoes, Lettuce, Green Beans, Bok Choi, Carrots, Beetroots, Zucchinis, Rainbow Chard, Cucumber, Basil, Coriander and Parsley. We also have a few jars of Gardenkraut remaining before we make our next batch.
Crops currently growing but not ready this week are Spinach, Red Russian Kale, Broccoli, Cauliflower, Sugar Snap Peas, Onions and Garlic
