Rainbow OMG Weekly Post 09/02/22

Hello Rainbow OMGers,

As I type it is sprinkling rain in Rainbow, just a few teasing drops. We had a great day at Turkey Bottom Lake yesterday and highly recommend this secret gem for camping or a day trip.

We are now fully into salad season which we now make in bulk. Jill will slice 3 Butterhead Lettuce and grate or use our mandolin slicer to add Carrots and Beetroots into a large container. This is our base for salads throughout the week. We can now add cherry tomatoes, basil, cucumbers, grated zucchini and soon sliced capsicums, all from the market garden. It is remarkable how good you feel all the time when you regularly eat fresh salad. We keep our salads interesting by varying the dressings we use and add protein in the form of cooked meat, eggs, tuna or feta cheese.

We may be vegetable growers but we recognise the important role of animals in both our diets and the ecosystems we live in. Our chicken flock not only provides us with eggs, they also work for us by preparing our compost. Nothing compares to chicken powered compost, they are built for this task. Permaculture Design teaches us to utilise the inherent characteristics of animals to our advantage, in this case chickens scratching up all our crop waste and adding their potent manure. We periodically muck out their yard and the resultant pile is half finished compost just needing some water and time to finish. Compost is the perfect fertiliser as it feeds the soil which in turn feeds the plants.

Over the last month we trialled 50% shade cloth on our Butterhead Lettuce. This has proven to be too much shade and many have bolted so we switched to 30% shade and the Lettuce will fine for the rest of Summer. We massively overplanted Lettuce this Summer to ensure a constant supply. We can see now that Butterhead Lettuce is a year round crop for us, as are Bok Choi, Beetroots, Carrots and I am sure many more as we continue to learn to grow in this climate.

As we scale up our CSA it is great to know what we can provide our Members all year.

This week we have a lot of Zucchini’s, Beefsteak Tomatoes, Cherry Tomatoes. Basil, Bok Choi, Cucumbers, Beetroots, Butterhead Lettuce and Parsley .

Crops currently growing but not ready this week are Green Beans, Carrots and Capsicums.

We will start fermenting a new Gardenkraut today.
