December Update
After an unseasonably cold start to December the weather today is looking glorious. Today’s post is an update on what we have growing at the farm. December is generally the final month of transition from cold to warm season crops, Spinach is now finished until after Summer and our final 2 Sugar Snap Pea beds are heavily producing in their final flush for the year. Both of these crops are very popular with our retail and commercial customers and are a seasonal joy to work with.
We will begin harvesting our first Zucchinis later this week, the Cherry Tomatoes have green fruit on the vines, Capsicums are in the ground and will really take off as the weather heats up, our initial Cucumbers were planted too early so will be replaced this week, Basil is in the ground and we are planting Green Beans, bush and climbing varieties anywhere they will fit.
Our first ever crop of Spring Onions will be ready soon, Celery is establishing itself nicely, we have a small amount of Bok Choi and Butterhead Lettuce, Rainbow Chard is back, Carrots are looking great, Garlic is curing, Beetroots are huge and plentiful, Coriander is abundant, Parsley is returning, Lemon Thyme is everywhere and we have multiple successions of Rocket and Salad Mix coming through for salad season.
Life is good in Nelson and we are excited for Tomatoe season to begin!
We will soon be launching Home Deliveries for residents of Portland! We have received a lot of interest after inquiring online. Deliveries will be every Thursday. Watch this space for more details.
Our produce is available year round at Food For Thought in Mount Gambier as well as Willow & Bean in Portland who also feature our produce on their menu.
We also supply produce to the Bayside Cafe in Portland and the Nelson Hotel.

Notes From The Garden
At Rainbow OMG we recognise the centuries long tradition of Moon Planting. In short the different phases of the Moon correspond to growth in in different parts of plants with about 7 days for each phase. The order is Leaf, Fruit/Flower, Root and Stop. We find this cycle an excellent tool for planning and scheduling of all the regular tasks needed for a functional farm.
We are currently in a Flower and Fruit week so are seeding more Cucumbers and Zucchinis, replacing Capsicums that were damaged by wind, pruning Tomatoes and direct seeding Green Beans here there and everywhere.
