New Year, New Town, New Garden
Welcome to 2024 it has been some time since our last email and we have plenty of news to share. As you may be aware in late July last year we made the difficult decision to pack up our home, lives and business and move out of Rainbow. We decided moved to Nelson, a beautiful fishing village right near the South Australian border about 20 minutes drive from Mount Gambier. Evan has a long history of playing music in Nelson and it is has been our holiday destination of choice since William was born.
The initial move to Nelson was made without any plans to continue market gardening. We were so burnt out from the lack of support in Rainbow that we couldn’t fathom completely restarting a new farm from the ground up. Evan spent the second half of 2023 moving, renovating and landscaping our home in Rainbow, essentially spending each weekend in Nelson and returning to Rainbow in our transit van for another full moving load and working on the house and garden. To make matters more difficult this was all done while healing broken ankle. A huge thank you must be sent out to our neighbours who provided a massive amount of help renovating the house for us to list it for sale and to our parents who continue to maintain our properties in Rainbow as we wait for them to sell.
This was a very difficult period for us physically, emotionally and spiritually. We had dedicated so much to setting up the market garden, website and YouTube channel and now it seemingly was all over. “What are we going to do now?” was a constant theme in our thoughts and conversations. We felt empty and without purpose.
As luck would have it our inspirational fire was rekindled in December after a few conversations with Nelson locals led us to believe that it was worth attempting our second market garden, this time in Nelson, servicing the local region including Mount Gambier. Another stroke of fortune was that the house we are renting has a back paddock that is ideal for a market garden. After a discussion with the landlords, permission was granted to use the back paddock and work has now begun on Rainbow OMG 2.0.
As seen in the photos above we have begun clearing the block and fence lines and will work away at the massive task list involved in setting up a commercial garden. We are aiming to be selling our locally grown, organic/biodynamic vegetables by mid 2024. We are once again excited for the future and the new challenge of serving our new community with the healthiest and most delicious produce, ferments and supplements we can create.
