Rainbow OMG Weekly Post 15/2/23

Compost is King

Healthy Soils = Healthy Plants = Healthy People

Yesterday was Valentines Day so of course we celebrated by making a giant compost pile. While shovelling horse manure and weeds into a pile may not be romantic to some, the end product is well worth the effort. Making good quality compost is both a science and art and is a skill which improves with practice. Compost is the world’s best fertiliser, it generally has a neutral pH, is high in organic matter (sequesters carbon) and contains a large spectrum on mineral and biological soil nutrition. In chemical free farming we feed the soil then the soil feeds the plants rather than feeding the plants with water soluble fertilisers. This pile was made from local horse manure, raked up leaves and accumulated weeds from the market garden. Our piles are static, meaning we do not turn them but they are watered periodically to keep the moisture up. We will soon be sourcing both Rock Dust and Biochar to add to our compost to make it even more potent.

This week the Garden is providing Butterhead Lettuce, Garlic, Cucumbers, Beetroots, Zucchini’s, Eggs, Rainbow Chard, Red Russian Kale, Carrots and Celery

Crops currently growing but not ready are Sugar Snap Peas, Bok Choi, Capsicums, Coriander, Parsley and Basil.
