Eggscelent Compost
Our Chickens are a critical element of our micro farm. Permaculture Design promotes that every element in a system should perform multiple functions and our flock provides us with eggs, labour saving and very high quality compost. Our chickens are housed in a Coop and Run, Deep Litter System. Shaded by a massive Eucalyptus tree in our home block they live under watchful eye of our beautiful dog Patch. It has been proven again and again that Chickens with daily access to fresh greens lay eggs with stronger whites and an overall increased nutritional profile as opposed to Cage eggs and some sketchy “Free Range” systems.
As seen in the photo we bring huge amounts of green, vegetative matter for them to eat, de-seed and scratch into smaller pieces for composting. Rather than free range all over our lawn we elect to bring green forage to our chickens every day, always spreading the fresh greens on top. This Deep Litter System eventually builds up a very deep pile which begins to actively compost underneath the run, providing a source of healthy fats and protein in the form of bugs. Twice a year we muck out the entire run and make a static compost pile which in turn is returned to our production beds, creating a very nice fertility loop.
We are now offering our small surplus of eggs for sale each week so be sure to check the store for OMG Eggs.
Notes From The Garden
This is a Leaf Week in the Lunar Calendar so we have been transplanting Lettuce, Rainbow Chard and Bok Choi as well as direct seeding Spinach and Coriander. In the Nursery we are sowing Lettuce, Rainbow Chard, Bok Choi and Celery. We have also been setting up all the trellising in the Greenhouse for our Tomatoes, Capsicums and Cucumbers which are all growing very nicely.
The latest Sunshine Salve is ready! Our new jars are 2.5 x the size of our previous jars so we have raised the price but increased the value for money. There are less than 20 available this time around as we are reserving quite a bit for our growing family. The larger jars will last a very long time, likely more than a year for most people.
A reminder that some of our range is limited so please get your orders in quickly to secure your desired organic vegetables.
This week the Garden is providing Eggs, Bok Choi, Red Cabbage, Butterhead Lettuce, Rainbow Chard, Spinach, Sugar Snap Peas (limited), Celery (Limited) Red Russian Kale, Carrots, Beetroots, Coriander and Parsley.
Rainbow OMG Buyers Hubs
Jeparit, Warracknabeal, Hopetoun, Beulah, Nhill, Dimboola etc
Are you interested in our delicious vegetables but live just that little bit too far away to be worth the drive to Rainbow just to pick up one order?
We are looking for Rainbow OMG supporters from other towns in the region who are interested in working with us to increase the distribution of our organic vegetables and healthy lifestyle products. Buyers Hub organisers will be rewarded for their efforts.
If you would like a Rainbow OMG Buyers Hub in your town, please email “evan@rainbowomg.com” with your name and town and we will be in contact ASAP to kick start the process.
Some of our products may be a little different to what customers are used to so we will be providing Product Profiles in our Weekly Post and in a dedicated page on our website. This will provide recipe ideas and nutritional information for all of the vegetables and products we offer.
Product Focus: Eggs
The humble chicken egg is a staple in the Australian kitchen. Contrary to popular opinion egg yolks are exceptionally good for you, cholesterol included! The healthiest way to eat an egg is a fully cooked white and raw egg yolk, such as an over-easy fried egg.
Did you know that there is a significant and measurable difference in the nutritional profile of eggs produced from chickens who have constant access to green forage as opposed to cage eggs? We bring fresh greens to our flock on a daily basis while keeping them safe in a Coop and Run, Deep Litter System.
Eggs are one of the healthiest foods a person can eat containing the following nutrition and health benefits:
- High in Protein
- Low in Carbohydrates
- Vitamins A, D and B12

- Reduces Risk of Heart Disease
- Improves Eye Health
- Protects against Oxidative Damage and Disease
- Aids in Weight Loss

We are very happy with the quality of our OMG Eggs and invite you to taste the difference.
