Rainbow OMG Weekly Post 09/03/22

Hello Rainbow OMGers,

The mornings are cool and the days are beautiful, it’s beginning to feel a lot like Autumn. This is now the third cooler than usual Summer we have experienced in a row and we are loving it. We have observed that most of our vegetables will tolerate any weather below 40°C and we barely touched that temperature all Summer. We have strategies for extreme heat but are grateful to not have to use them.
This was a Leaf Week in the Lunar Calendar and the cooler days have allowed us to push a bit harder while working outside. We transplanted beds of Lettuce, Bok Choi, Rainbow Chard and Basil as well as direct seeding 11 rows of Coriander and our first bed of Spinach for the year with our Jang Seeder, pictured in the middle of the photo above. We have also seeded roughly 600 cells of Lettuce, Red Russian Kale and Bok Choi in the Nursery.

Last week we had a very large Basil harvest and little sales so Jill whipped up a huge amount of Pesto which we have stored in the freezer for Winter. A favourite meal base in our kitchen is Zucchini Noodles (Zoodles) lightly fried in Olive Oil and Pesto. We use these to replace rice and pasta as a healthy, low carbohydrate alternative.

Speaking of Zucchini, we have permanently lowered our price from $7.50 to $5.00 per 500 g.

A quick reminder that Rainbow OMG will have a market stall at the upcoming Big Sky Festival in Rainbow on March 26 3-7 pm. We are really looking forward to getting our produce in front of more people to expand our customer base.

This week the garden is providing a lot of Zucchini’s, Bok Choi, Carrots, Cucumbers, Beetroots, Butterhead Lettuce, Cherry Tomatoes, Rainbow Chard, Coriander, Basil and Parsley.

Crops currently growing but not ready this week are Beefsteak Tomatoes Green Beans and Capsicums.

Featured Product Of The Week

Some of our products may be a little different to what customers are used to so we will be providing Product Profiles in our Weekly Post and in a dedicated page on our website. This will provide recipe ideas and nutritional information for all of the vegetables and products we grow and sell.

Product Focus: Sunshine Salve

Sunshine Salve is an all natural skin healing product. The salve is made with flowers and herbs from our gardens, decocted in olive oil, essential oils and set with beeswax. There are a lot of steps in the production of this salve from harvest to pouring into jars and It takes 5-7 days from start to finish. Jill imparts her magic, heart and soul into the production of this very powerful healing product and the potency is obvious to everyone who uses it.

As hard working farmers and parents we use Sunshine Salve on a daily basis on ourselves and our children. Mothers who have purchased or have been generously gifted this salve tell us their children ask for it every time they get a scratch or bruise, or better yet apply it themselves.

All the herbs and flowers in Sunshine Salve being Comfrey, Calendula, Yarrow and Plantain are grown in the gardens surrounding our main market garden beds. They help to create the full ecosystem we are attempting to mimic with our Permaculture Design methodology. Monocrops do not exist in nature so we follow this template and plant as much diversity as possible across the land we are blessed to have the opportunity to steward.

The herbs and flowers are extracted into Olive Oil from the Grampians and we then add essential oils and beeswax. The combination of all the above can provide the following health benefits:

  • Pain relief from sore muscles, bone injuries, bruises and arthritis
  • Faster healing of cuts, scrapes and abrasions
  • Faster healing of broken bones
  • Pain relief and healing from sunburn and regular burns from hot water or metal etc
  • Healing of scar tissue
  • Maintaining vibrant skin health in general

As usual a little goes a long way so the mantra is to use a little, often.
