Rainbow OMG Weekly Post 22/12/21

Merry Christmas Rainbow OMGers,

We have just past the Summer Solstice and give thanks to our life giving Sun and all its power. Our sun burnt Iceberg Lettuce is not so happy but all other crops just keep on trucking.

We wish you a Merry Christmas and thank you all for your support of our fledgling business in this incredibly difficult year.

We will continue operations all throughout the Holiday Season, always remember we can supply pick up orders on almost any day of the week.

This week Our CSA members will receive a lovely bag of Basil which means it will be generally available within 1-2 weeks for all customers. Basil should be available from then until the next frost or beyond.

Unfortunately our remaining Icebergs have all suffered sunburn and are no longer fit for sale. We will attempt another bed under much heavier shade cloth but more and more Butterhead Lettuce is proving itself the king in our climate.

Green Beans are still available, we have eaten 1 or 2 cucumbers and there are green tomatoes on the vines waiting to ripen. Our direct seeded coriander beds have also germinated.

We have sold our last jar of Gardenkraut. The next ferment we make will be based on Red Cabbage which will be available in January.

Some of our crops may be a little different to what customers are used to so we will be providing Vegetable Profiles in our Weekly Post and in a dedicated page on our website. This will provide recipe ideas and nutritional information for all of the vegetables we grow.

Vegetable Focus:  Basil

We are very excited to offer Basil to our customers, it is one of our favourite herbs and it packs quite a punch when it comes to nutrition and health benefits including:

  • Anti-Inflammatory
  • Antioxidants
  • Vitamins K, A and C
  • Manganese
  • Assists in inducing Cancer Cell death
  • Anti-Microbial including bacteria and viruses

Here are some ideas to get more Basil into your diet:

  • Add chopped leaves to any and all pasta dishes
  • Use whole fresh leaves as a pizza topping
  • Make a salad with tomatoes, cucumbers and feta cheese
  • Can be added to asian cooking as a substitute for Thai Basil (coming soon as well)
  • Make frozen pesto bricks for year round basil. We make pesto in bulk and freeze in silicon muffin trays. We then bag up the individual portions and add them to meals as needed when cooking over Winter.
