Supporting Local Food Production
We are now entering our 20th month of operations here in beautiful Nelson. As we rapidly progress into the madness of Spring and Summer production it is time to discuss the importance of community support for any local business but especially a family run, direct to customer farm business.
As a whole family we have invested almost 2 years of hard labour and a lot of money into this venture and it will be all for naught if more people and the businesses from the region and locally are unwilling to slightly change their spending habits and purchase what is clearly the best quality vegetables available anywhere in the region.
We always make every effort to provide the best value we can, while acknowledging the enormous amount of work and sacrifice it takes to maintain year round production of organic fresh produce. You can’t farm like this part time, especially in Summer. A market garden is essentially thousands and thousands of babies being raised in the ground, all with different needs to ensure the highest quality, you can’t just walk away for a few days, many farm tasks like harvesting, are strictly time dependent and the days are very long.
In a homogonised world of Coles, Woolworths and Aldi dominating all aspects of food sales in Australia, local businesses like ours face enormous challenges to achieve and maintain profitability. We dropped all of our prices when we set up our second farm and they cost less than any commercial “organic” produce available locally. Our produce also lasts a very, very long time so spoilage is not a concern.
Ultimately our future lies in the hands of our local and regional communities, we will continue to grow the best vegetables you could hope to buy. We will continue to reach out to more cafes, restaurants and retail outlets to expand our sales. We will dedicate the majority of our time into our contribution to local food security and see how it all looks at the end of this Summer.
The question we ask of our community is do you value access to high quality, chemical free food and if you do, are you willing to vote with your dollars and support those who are putting the effort in to provide it to you?
We look forward to continuing to serve you, improving our business and hopefully growing vegetables for a very long time to come.
This Saturday September 20th we return the the Mount Gambier Farmers Market for the first combined Farmers and Makers Market of Spring. It should be a fantastic day with over 30 stalls from creative people across the region. We will be there with our full spread of seasonal vegetables and hand made herbal supplements and look forward to seeing regular customers and meeting new ones.
Customers are welcome to come and visit the farm to take a look and purchase vegetables and supplements Monday to Saturday between 11:00 am and 6:00 pm.
Our produce is available year round at Food For Thought in Mount Gambier where you can find a wide range of healthy products to compliment our vegetables and are featured on the menu at the Nelson Hotel.
We are actively seeking a retail outlet in Portland to extend our reach in the local region.
Look out for official farm tours coming soon!
As always you can support our family and business by purchasing our supplements which are available 24/7 from our websit and can be posted anywhere in the world.

Notes From The Garden
At Rainbow OMG we recognise the centuries long tradition of Moon Planting. In short the different phases of the Moon correspond to growth in in different parts of plants with about 7 days for each phase. The order is Leaf, Fruit/Flower, Root and Stop. We find this cycle an excellent tool for planning and scheduling of all the regular tasks needed for a functional farm.
We are currently in a Stop Week and the main task for this week is to find more customers in and around harvesting for our restaurant orders and the Farmers Market stall this weekend.

Product Focus – Spinach
Spinach is one of our most popular crops and needs no introduction. Our Spinach leaves range from baby to quite large and will keep fresh for weeks (not days) in your fridge, it is delicious eaten raw or cooked and is packed with the following nutritional and health benefits:

Here are some ideas to get more Spinach into your diet:
