Rainbow OMG Weekly Post 5/9/24

A Birds Eye View

When embarking on the journey of building a passion based business it is vital to periodically take a step back and contemplate on your achievements so far. It is easy to only focus on the boots on the ground, long list of tasks that still need to be completed and feel lost or even a little helpless.  Taking a moment to pause, step back and reflect on all that has been achieved and to celebrate the small wins assists greatly in staying the path and ultimately achieving success.

This week our Landlord was flying his plane over Nelson and snapped this photo of our micro farm. Although there are still more beds to shape, trenches to dig, sales avenues established, chicken run to build etc we took a moment to pause and reflect on what we have accomplished in the 8 months since we decided to pick up our shovels again and breathe life back into our family business and passion.

As the new moon in Virgo signals the start of a new lunar cycle, there are many things keeping us grounded in the cycle as this week Spring has arrived with the budding of fruit trees and the warmth in soil has woken up our next flush of seeds. There are new rotations of crops ready to be planted and Jill and the kids have been flat out doing ground prep for more fruit trees and flower gardens. We look forward to sharing the bounty of our land in the coming season of tourists and with our extended community.

In the next few weeks we will be launching our Home Delivery Service to Mount Gambier, we will be offering home delivery of all our produce to all residents of Mount Gambier with orders placed through our website. Watch this space.

Notes From The Garden

At Rainbow OMG we recognise the centuries long tradition of Moon Planting. In short the different phases of the Moon correspond to growth in in different parts of plants with about 7 days for each phase. The order is Leaf, Fruit/Flower, Root and Stop. We find this cycle an excellent tool for planning and scheduling of all the regular tasks needed for a functional farm.

We are currently in a Leaf week after a long Stop cycle ending with the new moon. So we spent last week flame weeding, hand weeding, improving our wash/pack station and bed preparation. This Leaf week we will transplant Lettuce, Spinach, Bok Choi, Rainbow Chard, Kale and Celery, Direct Seed Coriander and Parsley as well as seeding all the above as well as Basil in the Nursery for the coming months. Being that Spring is just around the corner we have have already germinated Summer varieties such as Tomatoes, Capsicums, Cucumbers, Basil and Zucchini as well as direct seeded Bush Beans anywhere we can fit them.
