Rainbow OMG Weekly Post 31/7/24

Welcome to Rainbow OMG 2.0

Hello and welcome to Rainbow OMG 2.0. We are a small-scale, organic, family run vegetable farm located on the edge of the Nelson State Forest and the small fishing village of Nelson. We utilise no-dig principles in our garden and grow the highest quality, fresh vegetables anyone could ask for.  We have been diligently landscaping and planting our farm plot since the start of January this year and are roughly 70% finished.

We are now in the depths of Winter and have many frost hardy crops available already. Current crops available for purchase are Spinach, Bok Choi, Butterhead Lettuce, Rainbow Chard, Beetroots, Carrots and Parsley. We also have Celery, Kale, Red Cabbage, Broccoli, Sugar Snap Peas and Coriander planted and growing nicely. In Summer you can look forward to Tomatoes, Cucumbers, Zucchini, Capsicum, Basil, Green Beans and more coming on as we roll into the warmer months.

With Evan’s 39th birthday rolling around this weekend we felt it a great time to re-launch the weekly email list. Our produce is now featured on the menu at the Nelson Hotel and is stocked and available at Food For Thought in Mount Gambier. Orders can also be placed through our online store for local pickup and customers are welcome to come and visit the farm 7 days a week between 11:00 am and 6:00 pm. Weekly home deliveries to Mount Gambier will begin in a few months when we have a fully planted farm and more production.

Notes From The Garden

At Rainbow OMG we recognise the centuries long tradition of Moon Planting. In short the different phases of the Moon correspond to growth in in different parts of plants with about 7 days for each phase. The order is Leaf, Fruit/Flower, Root and Stop. We find this cycle an excellent tool for planning and scheduling of all the regular tasks needed for a functional farm.

We are currently in a Stop Week which means we stop all planting and seeding and focus on infrastructure and weeding. This week we have been spreading loads of woodchips in our paths, flame weeding the remaining bare patches yet to be landscaped and seeded, assembled a small greenhouse for seed starting, continuing to work on our wash and pack station and back end work on our website. Stop Weeks are very enjoyable as a time of organising and moving the whole project forward.

The white stems are crisp and sweet and the greens have a mild, peppery flavour, Bok Choi grows year round in our climate so should form a staple of a seasonal, local diet.

They are yet another nutritional powerhouse containing:

  • Vitamins A, K, C and B6.
  • Folate, Calcium, Manganese, Potassium, Magnesium and Iron..
  • Low in Calories.
  • Great for Heart Health, Bone Density, Eyesight, Skin and Hair Health and Boosting Immunity.
  • Assists healthy pregnancy due to high levels of Folate

Here are some ideas to get more Bok Choi into your diet:
