Seeds Of Hope
As gentle rain falls in Nelson, blessing our land with moisture and atmospheric nitrogen we can reflect on what it means to start an Organic Market Garden (OMG) in a new market and climate. Every seed sown in these fledgling months is akin to saying a prayer for the future. We plant with the intention of nourishing our community while earning a good living to provide for our small, young family. We already live in paradise, now is the time to cement ourselves here with a quality business with the triple bottom line of healthy people, healthy land and a healthy profit margin on top.
While our previous incarnation in Rainbow ultimately was a failure commercially, we learned a lot in our time there and it is noticeably easier this time around. We have acquired the right tools to make life easier, the knowledge and skills of growing crops in the right planting densities, rotation order and seasons, how to run a wash station and the right equipment to store our harvest while preserving freshness and quality. We still have a long way to go in the set up phase but everything is moving in the right direction.
Notes From The Garden
As always our work schedule is dictated by the phases of the moon. Last week was a Stop Week in the Lunar Calendar so we ceased all planting and focused on infrastructure works. This week we focused on gaps in fences, installing gates and of course digging out more new garden beds and filling the paths with woodchip mulch supplied by our local arborist.
The coming week is Leaf Week, which is our busiest week in the cycle and will involve transplanting Lettuce, Spinach, Red Cabbage, Bok Choi and Rainbow Chard into market beds. We will sow more of these crops in seedling trays and Jill will use this time to propagate medicinal plants such as Comfrey which is the base herb of Sunshine Salve as well as being a fantastic ingredient for our on farm compost piles.
