Rainbow OMG Weekly Post 12/4/23

Rain, Rain, Glorious Rain

Hello everyone, we were blessed with two breaks over the weekend. The first being taking a week off from our deliveries to do catch up tasks all over the farm, the second being the Autumn Break rains, we have measured over 20 mm on the weekend and another 4 mm last night. We really celebrate the Autumn Break as it means we no longer have mass irrigation to contend with on a daily basis. The cooler months allow us more free time to work both ‘on’ an ‘in’ the business rather than just keep up with everything.

This Week On YouTube

Our latest video is live on YouTube in which Jill discusses Easter, the changing seasons and living in tune with natural cycles.

Notes From The Garden

At Rainbow OMG we plant by the Moon as much as we possible can. We do this as we recognise the centuries long wisdom of farmers observing that different stages on the Moon co-relate to growth in different parts of the plant. The cycle is Leaf, Flower, Fruit, Root, Stop.

Last week was a Root Week in the Lunar Calendar, so we have been doing bed preparations for Onions, broke new ground in 4 beds for this years Garlic, seeded Beetroots in the Nursery and weeded our younger Carrot and Beetroot beds. As usual we also planted and seeded 1 bed worth of Lettuce. We are really seeing the slow down in growth rate as the sunlight hours diminish. We are hopeful that a few days of sunshine after this rain will really kick on our Spinach beds which are still quite small.

This week the Garden is providing Sugar Snap Peas, Celery, Bok Choi, Butterhead Lettuce, Garlic, Zucchini’s, Eggs, Rainbow Chard, Cucumbers, Carrots, Red Russian Kale and Coriander.

Crops currently growing but not ready are Cherry Tomatoes, Beetroots, Spinach, Capsicums, Sugar Snap Peas, Rainbow Salad, Beetroots.

Some of our products may be a little different to what customers are used to so we will be providing Product Profiles in our Weekly Post and in a dedicated page on our website. This will provide recipe ideas and nutritional information for all of the vegetables and products we offer.

Product Focus: Rainbow Chard

The ever beautiful Rainbow Chard is simply multi coloured Silverbeet. Rather than just green and white Silverbeet, Rainbow Chard comes in red, pink, orange, yellow, white with pink stripes, white and more allowing you to Eat The Rainbow. Rainbow Chard is far more heat tolerant that traditional Spinach and is generally available all year.

Rainbow Chard can be best described as salty spinach crossed with celery. It is best served lightly cooked and is generally prepared by cutting the leaves off the stem, then slicing the stem up like celery and the leaves like spinach.
