Waking Up With The Sun
Operating a Market Garden really puts one in sync with natural systems and cycles. There are cycles of day length, sunlight angles, temperature variations, weather patterns, insects, decay and regeneration cycles and more. At some point last year I realised I no longer needed to set an alarm clock as I now simply wake up just as the first sun rays are creeping over the horizon. Rising early has many benefits but one such benefit is seeing open Zucchini flowers before they close up with the sun, they are such gorgeous flowers and often have bees in them even in the early hours.

Notes From The Garden
We had a great week in the garden, we cured our onions (not for sale) seeded a huge amount of Summer veg in the Nursery, picked up some horse manure for our next compost pile, Direct Seeded Carrots and Beetroots as well as a lot of general hand weeding. We are feeling very much back on track and looking forward to launching in Horsham in early 2023.
This week the Garden is providing Garlic, Beetroots, Green Beans, Tomatoes, Zucchini’s, Eggs, Rainbow Chard, Red Russian Kale, Carrots and Celery
Crops currently growing but not ready are Butterhead Lettuce, Bok Choi, Capsicums, Cucumbers, Corn, Coriander, Parsley and Basil.
Some of our products may be a little different to what customers are used to so we will be providing Product Profiles in our Weekly Post and in a dedicated page on our website. This will provide recipe ideas and nutritional information for all of the vegetables and products we offer.
Product Focus: Cherry Tomatoes
Of course everyone has eaten tomatoes, we have many heirloom varieties growing this year. A lot of commercially available tomatoes are picked green off the vine and force ripened in distribution centres with Ethylene gas. All our tomatoes are picked as red and ripe as possible to maximise both flavour and health benefits.
Vine-Ripened Tomatoes are like eating sunshine and are packed with healthy nutrients including:
- Vitamins A, K, C and E
- Manganese, Potassium, Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Zinc and Copper
- Niacin, Pantothenic Acid, Choline and Betaine
- High in Antioxidants, notably Lycopene. Lycopene has been linked to the reduction of size of cancer cells and stalling the spread of cancer througout the body
- Low in Calories
- Great for Heart Health, Bone Density, Eyesight, Boosting Immunity and even Protects against Sunburn
Here are some ideas to get more Tomatoes into your diet:
- Cherry tomatoes are a stand alone snack
- Serve sliced tomatoes with avocado on toast. Freshly ground pepper on top brings a whole new level of flavour to this meal.
- Make home made passata
- Make a seasonal summer salad with tomatoes, cucumber and basil. Feta Cheese is an optional excellent addition to this salad.
- Bologniase pasta sauce
- Make home made pizza’s and top with tomatoes and basil.
