Notes From The Garden

This is a Root Week in the Lunar Calendar and as such we Direct Seeded Carrots and Beetroots and have been preparing our Turmeric and Ginger bed at the front of the block. Jill remained remarkably active throughout her pregnancy and was working on the Turmeric and Ginger bed with Evan the final day before birth.  This bed was sown with Buckwheat and Daikon Radish around April this year. The Buckwheat frosted off in Winter but the Daikons grew all winter, sending their large tubers/roots far down into the soil. We cut off all the tops for compost, leaving the roots to rot in the ground. If time allows this week we will broadfork the whole bed and plant out our Turmeric and Ginger root divisions.  In the Nursery we are sowing Beetroots as back up if we have poor germination from Direct Seeding.

The latest Sunshine Salve is ready! Our new jars are 2.5 x the size of our previous jars so we have raised the price but increased the value for money. There are less than 20 available this time around as we are reserving quite a bit for our growing family. The larger jars will last a very long time, likely more than a year for most people.

A reminder that some of our range is limited so please get your orders in quickly to secure your desired organic vegetables.

This week the Garden is providing Eggs, Bok Choi, Red Cabbage, Butterhead Lettuce, Rainbow Chard, Spinach, Sugar Snap Peas, Celery, Red Russian Kale, Carrots, Beetroots, Coriander and Parsley.

Crops currently growing but not ready are Tomatoes, Capsicums, Cucumbers, Corn, Green Beans, Zucchini and Basil.

Are you interested in our delicious vegetables but live just that little bit too far away to be worth the drive to Rainbow just to pick up one order?

We are looking for Rainbow OMG supporters from other towns in the region who are interested in working with us to increase the distribution of our organic vegetables and healthy lifestyle products. Buyers Hub organisers will be rewarded for their efforts.

If you would like a Rainbow OMG Buyers Hub in your town, please email “evan@rainbowomg.com” with your name and town and we will be in contact ASAP to kick start the process.

Some of our products may be a little different to what customers are used to so we will be providing Product Profiles in our Weekly Post and in a dedicated page on our website. This will provide recipe ideas and nutritional information for all of the vegetables and products we offer.

Product Focus: Coriander

Coriander is a small green herb that looks quite similar to flat leaf Parsley. In Australia we generally use Coriander to describe the herb (fresh leaves) and the ground seeds as a spice while other countries use the term Cilantro to describe the leaves. Coriander is used extensively in Indian foods and in fact in most Asian cooking in general, it is also used in Mexican dished like tacos. It has a unique flavour and has the ability to transform a meal into something special. More than just a garnish Coriander, like all herbs, should be used and eaten in larger quantities than most people tend to serve so we encourage customers to use more than you might think per person.

Here is the best part, Coriander is a very potent natural healer both in nutritional profile and its ability to detox the body. Coriander contains:

  • Vitamins K, A, C and E
  • Calcium, Iron, Phosphorous and Potassium
  • Assists the body rid itself of heavy metals such as Arsenic, Cadmium, Lead, Aluminium and Mercury (Most people have at least one of these accumulating in their bodies)
  • Protects against oxidative stress
  • Reduces Anxiety
  • Lowers Blood Sugar
  • Supports Heart Health
  • Reduces Urinary Tract Infections
  • Settles an upset stomach
  • Protects against Food Poisoning
  • Protects against Colon Cancer
  • Can be used to soothe skin irritations

Here are some ideas to get more Coriander into your diet:

  • Add a good amount of freshly chopped leaves on top of each bowl when serving your favourite Curry or Stir Fry
  • Use fresh chopped leaves in addition to lettuce in Tacos
  • Add leaves to boost your home made Guacamole
  • Use instead of Basil for an alternative in making Pesto. Extra tip freeze your pesto in silicon muffin trays then bag them up in the freezer so you can add to your cooking on demand.
  • Coriander pairs very well with Lime Juice in most dishes

All items listed for $7.50 are discounted at 3 for $20 when paying with cash or cryptocurrency i.e. 1 x Rainbow Chard, 1 x Capsicum and 1 x Carrots = $20.

Please head to www.rainbowomg.com to finalise your orders by 5:00 am Friday morning. All Rainbow orders will be delivered from the new time of 1:00 pm Friday. For all clients who do not live in Rainbow, Local Pickup times can be arranged by contacting us.
