Rainbow OMG Weekly Post 26/2/25

Happy Birthday Jill

Rainbow OMG is a family run business which blurs the line between work, play and learning. We have attempted to create a lifestyle where we can raise our children in a safe and healthy environment while providing a valuable service for our local region. Jill and Evan work as a team, sharing workload as required while prioritizing unique skills and talents towards their most productive ends.

Jill is a tireless, devoted mother, wife and farmer but she is far more than that. She is a skilled yoga practitioner, herbal medicine maker, fantastic cook, painter, mountain bike enthusiast, intuitive psychic and of course a fun loving, beautiful woman. She is also the creative mind behind all the fun video reels we release on a regular basis. This ship could not sail without Jill and as her husband I am the luckiest man alive.

We love you Jill and wish you the happiest of birthdays for tomorrow. We will be enjoying a meal at the Nelson Hotel prepared by their new and excellent Chef and featuring our vegetables.

Notes From The Garden

At Rainbow OMG we recognise the centuries long tradition of Moon Planting. In short the different phases of the Moon correspond to growth in in different parts of plants with about 7 days for each phase. The order is Leaf, Fruit/Flower, Root and Stop. We find this cycle an excellent tool for planning and scheduling of all the regular tasks needed for a functional farm.

This week is Stop Week and last week was a Root Week. So we have direct seeded Beetroots and Carrots and have spent significant time tweaking our infrastructure to improve work flow and efficiency.

Product Focus – Bok Choi

Bok Choi also known as Asian Greens are from the Brassica family of vegetable which also include Broccoli, Cabbage, Mustard etc. Our Bok Choi’s are much larger than those normally available in stores. The white stems are crisp and sweet and the greens have a mild, peppery flavour, Bok Choi grows year round in our climate so should form a staple of a seasonal, local diet.

They are yet another nutritional powerhouse containing:

  • Vitamins A, K, C and B6.
  • Folate, Calcium, Manganese, Potassium, Magnesium and Iron..
  • Low in Calories.
  • Great for Heart Health, Bone Density, Eyesight, Skin and Hair Health and Boosting Immunity.
  • Assists healthy pregnancy due to high levels of Folate

Here are some ideas to get more Bok Choi into your diet:

  • Use in Stir Fry, Curry or Miso Soup
  • Use in place of Broccoli when out of season. Bok Choi grows year round, Broccoli only grows in the cooler months in our climate
  • Shred into Coleslaw
  • Combine with Sugar Snap Peas or Green Beans as a low carb rice or noodle alternative
  • Make your own ferments such as Kimchi

Bok Choi grows all year in our climate and is an important staple in a seasonal diet. We invite you to try Bok Choi today.
