Rainbow OMG Weekly Post 23/10/24

Family Friendly Farming

Yesterday was a beautiful reminder of why we chose this lifestyle and why we have been working 7 days a week since the start of January to set up our second market garden. Our farm is less than 10 metres away from our home and is entirely visible from the kitchen sink. This means our children are able to come in and out as they please, even play together on the trampoline as we plant, harvest or even do some weeding.

I was harvesting Beetroots for the Pop Up Market this weekend when my 2 year old daughter came out to see what I up to. I was pulling Beetroots with two containers, one for the tops and bottoms to go to compost piles, the other for the actual Beetroots. As seen in the photo she took it upon herself to jump in and help, putting the Beetroots in the harvest container and even dragging it down the row as we made our way down the bed. Yes my 2 year old daughter was legitimately helping me in my work day and she was safe the entire time.

Farming is a word that often invokes images of huge machines, loud noises, dangerous tools and chemicals, none of which are safe or enjoyable for young children to engage with. For us farming is working with hand tools, listening to music and singing as we work and involving every member of the family to their abilities as much as possible. For us there is no distinction between home, work and education as they are all one and the same. It might not be right for everyone but this model is perfect for our family, thank you for helping us make it happen.

Our next Pop Up Market is this Saturday 10:00 – 2:00 pm at the Limestone Coast Pantry. We look forward to seeing many of you there, come treat yourself to a coffee, delicious meal and go home with some of the best quality vegetables you could hope to access.

Our produce is now featured on the menu at the Nelson Hotel and is always stocked and available at Food For Thought in Mount Gambier. Customers are welcome to come and visit the farm to take a look and purchase vegetables 7 days a week between 11:00 am and 6:00 pm.

Notes From The Garden

At Rainbow OMG we recognise the centuries long tradition of Moon Planting. In short the different phases of the Moon correspond to growth in in different parts of plants with about 7 days for each phase. The order is Leaf, Fruit/Flower, Root and Stop. We find this cycle an excellent tool for planning and scheduling of all the regular tasks needed for a functional farm.

This week was a Root Week so we have direct seeded more Carrots, transplanted Beetroots, planted some Garlic and Liquorice Root as well as seeding more Beetroots in the greenhouse.
