Mulch, Rain and Seedlings
Yesterday was a great day for us at Rainbow OMG as we had the first significant rainfall since early January. The entire market garden site has received a good drink, changing the soil from a dusty grey to a deep, chocolate brown. The soil is now ready to plant and we will now see a large flush of “weeds” germinate, but never fear we have the tools, skills and wisdom to deal with weeds of all shapes and sizes. No chemicals, even “organic certified” chemicals will ever touch our garden, we work with Creation to enhance all life, not destroy it.
In other great news the local arborist JK Tree Service delivered a truckload of Blue Gum mulch to the farm site and we have begun mulching out our access paths and walkways. We mulch our beds with finished compost and everywhere else with woodchips. Woodchip in the paths reduces evaporation and erosion, helps spread water across the site and provided nutrients to the entire site as the mycelium fungal network coverts the wood into compost. Think of it as a spine and rib-cage running through the farm, feeding the soil, irrigating crops and reducing maintenance.
Notes From The Garden
Last week was a Leaf Week in the Lunar Calendar so we seeded trays of Lettuce, Spinach, Rainbow Chard, Celery, Red Cabbage and Bok Choi. All of these have since germinated other than Celery which take a very long time to germinate, as a general rule the smaller the seed the longer they take to emerge.
Our direct seeded Carrots and Beetroots have all germinated and are growing very nicely. All plants needed some extra water in the recent heatwaves but nothing was lost, our previous garden was in a very hot climate so we are well equipped to deal with such conditions. Freshly harvested, Organic produce will be available in your near future.
