Sowing Vegetables is a Prayer for the Future
Working in our Nursery is a form of meditation for me. We now have a good setup with a nice workflow and I allow my mind to wander to the future as I carefully place one seed in each tiny cell of our seedling trays. Every one of these tiny seeds represents gifts for the future in the form of health, flavour, beauty, satisfaction and wealth in all its forms.
I sowed 914 individual seeds yesterday and will sow hundreds more this afternoon when I get home from the Gardening work I do for other people each Wednesday. Setting up a new business from the ground up is an enormous task, if people in town don’t see us much it is because we work until we drop everyday, attempting to build a great life for our family while providing a valuable service to our region.

Notes From The Garden
The weather is gorgeous again this week however we are now well and truly into Autumn and as such Cucumbers and Tomatoes are done for the season, Capsicums and Basil will continue to grow in the Greenhouse. Sugar Snap Peas and Spinach have now rooted nicely and will be producing consistently until early Summer. We also started a new Gardenkraut ferment this week which should be ready and available in 2-3 weeks.
At Rainbow OMG we plant by the Moon as much as we possible can. We do this as we recognise the centuries long wisdom of farmers observing that different stages on the Moon co-relate to growth in different parts of the plant. The cycle is Leaf, Flower, Fruit, Root, Stop.
This week is a Leaf week so we have transplanted Spinach and Lettuce, direct seeded Coriander and in the Nursery we have seeded, Lettuce, Spinach, Rainbow Chard, Red Russian Kale, Parsley, Basil and Tagasaste Trees.
This week the Garden is providing Sugar Snap Peas, Celery, Bok Choi, Beetroots, Spinach, Butterhead Lettuce, Garlic, Zucchini’s, Eggs, Rainbow Chard, Cucumbers, Carrots, Red Russian Kale, Basil, Parsley and Coriande.r
Crops currently growing but not ready are Capsicums.
Some of our products may be a little different to what customers are used to so we will be providing Product Profiles in our Weekly Post and in a dedicated page on our website. This will provide recipe ideas and nutritional information for all of the vegetables and products we offer.
Product Focus: Carrots
Everyone is familiar with carrots. They can be eaten raw or cooked and are one of the most popular root vegetables on Earth.
Did you know that the original carrot was purple? It is rumoured that the orange carrots we know and love today originated in 17th Century Holland where growers bred orange varieties to gain favour of Dutch Royalty, orange being the colour of the royal family. This may or may not be true but it is a good story anyway 🙂
In terms of nutrition carrots contain:
- Vitamins A, C and K
- Thiamin, Niacin and Vitamin B6
- Potassium
- Beta Carotene, Lutein and Zeaxanthin
Carrots can provide the following health benefits and more:
- Protecting Eye Health
- Boosting Immune System with Antioxidants
- Decreasing Risk of Stokes and Heart Disease
- Protecting Against Cancers
- Maintaining Oral Health
- Boosting Skin Health and Wound Repair
- Protecting Brain Health and Improving Cognitive Function
Carrots grow all year in climate and are an important staple in a local, seasonal diet.
