Building Community<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Another successful Pop Up Market has been and gone. This week we were prompted to take a step back and appreciate the community that is forming around our business. It is a real joy to stand at our market stall and see our new customers conversing with each other about health information, cooking tips, gardening and practical solutions outside of the political system. We have found our tribe and will continue to draw other like minded people out of the woodwork as we forge ahead with producing local food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One noticeable difference in our second market garden location is how many people are offering resources to help with the more difficult tasks involved in setting up our infrastructure. Despite having the means to easily assist, almost no one in our previous location offered to help us in any meaningful way so we had to do everything the hard way, digging everything by hand and using wheelbarrows and rakes for all of the landscaping.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This time around, in Nelson we had assistance from a good friend in clearing the garden area and a discounted rate from a local Bobcat operator to remove vegetation and flatten the land so we could map our the farm and start growing. We have also had offers from customers to loan a mini excavator if needed and then this weekend, after the market, one of our new customers and friends came over with his “Dingo” to do the final clean up of the site. He spread ash from a burn pile, consolidated three compost piles into one and best of all transformed a large mound of top soil into a level pad for a future greenhouse. All of these acts of kindness have saved us weeks and weeks of gruelling manual labour and we are eternally grateful to have people around us who not only care about our success but are also willing to directly help with their own unique skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This week is Home Delivery Friday, our webstore has been populated with all available produce and orders can be placed until 7:00 am on Friday. All orders will be delivered in a returnable, insulated shopping bag by us the farmers. There is nothing more convenient than ordering online and home delivery of the best local produce available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our produce is now featured on the menu at the Nelson Hotel<\/a> and is always stocked and available at Food For Thought<\/a> in Mount Gambier. Customers are welcome to come and visit the farm to take a look and purchase vegetables 7 days a week between 11:00 am and 6:00 pm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Notes From The Garden<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

At Rainbow OMG we recognise the centuries long tradition of Moon Planting. In short the different phases of the Moon correspond to growth in in different parts of plants with about 7 days for each phase. The order is Leaf, Fruit\/Flower, Root and Stop. We find this cycle an excellent tool for planning and scheduling of all the regular tasks needed for a functional farm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This week is Flower and Fruit Week so we have transplanted Capsicums, Tomatoes, Bush Beans, Butter Beans and more flowers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
